Wedding Videographer at Cider Mill Barns in Warwickshire (During A Summer Heat-Wave)
Lucy and Johnny were married at Cider Mill Barns in Warwickshire, near Stratford-upon-Avon.
This was my first time filming at Cider Mill Barns. Slightly ironic, because it’s actually the closest wedding venue to me. I’d moved to Stratford about a year earlier, and somehow hadn’t worked there yet.
It happened in the height of summer in the midst of a heatwave. The grass in the surrounding fields had turned that sun-burnt golden brown, and there was that heavy, warm countryside smell in the air. It felt like the kind of day that suits a barn wedding perfectly.
I’ve been filming weddings across the Cotswolds and surrounding counties for over ten years, so I’m always interested in how a venue actually functions on the day, not just how it appears on film and Cider Mill Barns surprised me in a good way.

Arriving at Cider Mill Barns
There’s a gated entrance as the family who own the venue still live on site. Once you drive through and follow the private driveway, you genuinely wouldn’t know there was a wedding venue tucked behind there.
It feels secluded. Private. But still easy for guests to get to.
The buildings are converted farm structures, with the ceremony and reception spaces purpose-built more recently. From what I understand, the wedding side of the venue was developed during or after Covid. You can feel that it’s been intentionally designed rather than just adapted, but still retains character.
What stood out most was the balance between rustic and modern. Exposed brick. Wooden floors. But also clean lines, large glass windows, and a plant-covered feature wall in the reception room.
On Lucy and Johnny’s day, the family were working throughout. Behind the bar. Adjusting details. Making sure everything was right, it was a proper team effort, making sure the couple and their guests were thoroughly taken care of – honestly, admirable!
Morning Preparations
Bride preparations happen in a wooden-clad building just across from the ceremony barn. There’s barely any distance to walk when the ceremony time comes.
Inside, it feels more like a small house than a typical bridal suite. It has its own kitchen, large windows overlooking the fields, and enough space for hair and makeup without everyone being on top of each other.
From a documentary point of view, the layout makes things simple. While Lucy was getting ready, I could pop across to the main barn to capture guests arriving, then step back for final touches without feeling like I was constantly racing between locations.
Everything is close, but separate enough to feel calm.

The Ceremony at Cider Mill Barns
The ceremony space is a wide barn-style room with a sliding door entrance for the bride. When Lucy walked in, she entered through that door, which works well as a reveal, and wow’s guests in the perfect way.
The aisle is medium in length. You’re not walking for an entire song, but there’s more than enough time for the moment to land.
At this wedding, there were seven seats across on each side, which gives you a sense of the width of the room. The ceilings are high, and behind where the couple stand is a large triple window set slightly raised on a ledge. From most seats, guests get a clear view of the ceremony.
When filming a wedding at Cider Mill Barns, I positioned:
- One static camera at the centre back of the aisle to capture the entrance and the groom’s reaction when he turns
- Another at the front left (facing down the aisle) so I could capture both faces during the vows
Everything was set on fixed tripods before Lucy entered. I don’t move during the ceremony. I keep distance and use longer lenses if needed so guests aren’t distracted, this is what documentary style videography is all about.
Even in the heatwave, the air conditioning held up. Nobody looked uncomfortable. It’s one of those details you only notice when it isn’t working, but coming back into the air conditioning after going outside was absolute bliss for everyone.
The brick texture, wooden floors and strong natural light give the space warmth without it feeling dark which I enjoyed.

Drinks Reception & Confetti
After the ceremony, Lucy and Johnny exited to the right while guests moved left before heading outside. That small separation keeps things flowing.
There’s a covered outdoor area and garden space, so guests can spread out. Some grabbed drinks. Some sat in the shade. Some stepped inside briefly to cool down.
Confetti was done using bubbles rather than petals. In the full summer sun, they were almost iridescent. They caught the light and drifted around the couple in a softer way than traditional confetti.
One of the most memorable moments was a surprise saxophonist organised by Lucy’s family. As soon as the music started, she realised what was happening. You could see it register as she heard her favourite song, and tears filled her eyes.

The Orchard & Golden Hour
Cider Mill Barns has an orchard on site with apple and pear trees. On this day, they were full. Bright reds and greens against the summer light.
The owner even suggested I try a pear as they were perfectly ripe. It was the first time I’d picked one straight from a tree. Small detail, but it says something about the atmosphere of the place.
The orchard is close enough that you’re never far from guests. We stepped away for portraits, took a short stroll, and were back within a few minutes
To catch the actual sunset, we walked up the main concrete driveway surrounded by fields and trees. In summer, the sun sets over the corner of the fields and turns everything golden again. The driveway gives you clean leading lines for walking shots.
If the weather had changed, there were strong indoor options too. Exposed brick walls. The plant feature wall in the reception space. Large glass windows bringing in light.
It’s flexible without needing to overcomplicate anything, my favourite type of venue.

Wedding Breakfast & Evening
Lucy and Johnny were welcomed into their wedding breakfast with roaring applause. The whole day felt centred around family and friends. You could tell they were close to the people in that room. The speeches were the perfect combination of nostalgia, laughter and love.
They cut a large three-tier pearl-covered wedding cake before inviting everyone onto the dance floor for their first dance. It didn’t take long before it was packed.
Later in the evening, burgers were served. A couple clearly not wanting anyone to go hungry! (Most appreciated!)
We finished with a sparkler tunnel outside the barn. The light against the darker fields made for a strong, simple ending.
